Why your panels produce less than the quote said
A 4 kWp array does not deliver 4 kW. Between the irradiance landing on the glass and the kilowatt-hours reaching the meter sit five separate losses and one small gain, and they can be listed with numbers against them rather than described as inefficiency.

Do solar panels work in shade, and how much do you lose
Panels keep producing in shade, from diffuse light. The expensive question is different: what one small opaque shadow does to the rest of the array. Bypass diodes decide the answer, and they work in thirds.

Manufacturers warrant a straight line. Field measurements across 11,000 recorded degradation rates show a median close to that line and a mean well below it. The gap between those two numbers is where warranty claims live.

A panel is rated at a cell temperature of 25°C. On a still, sunny day in the low thirties the cells sit near 60°C, and every degree above the rating costs output. The annual cost in Britain is modest. The cost at two in the afternoon in July is not.

Roof direction is treated as the thing that decides whether solar is worth doing. Modelled properly, 30° off south costs between two and three per cent a year, and any tilt between 25° and 50° is within about two per cent of the best one.

Dutch net metering ends on 1 January 2027
The salderingsregeling is abolished by a law that passed both chambers in 2024. There is no grandfathering: an array commissioned in 2019 and one commissioned in December 2026 both lose net metering on the same day. What replaces it is a supplier-set payment with a statutory floor until 2030.

There is no national answer, because net metering is set by states and utilities rather than by Washington. There are only three shapes a regime can take, and once you know which one covers you, your own tariff sheet becomes readable.

What California NEM 3.0 pays for exported solar
Under the Net Billing Tariff, an exported kilowatt-hour is no longer worth the retail rate. It is worth whatever the Avoided Cost Calculator says it is worth in that specific hour of that specific month, and those values are lowest in the middle of a sunny day.
